The Roaring 20's

Clothing fashions during the 1920’s were unlike any other time, though the ornate beading popular on women’s dresses can be traced directly back to Victorian preference for dresses covered in beading.  Long dresses with no waistlines, sleeveless and clinging to the form, the “flapper” style pervaded the American female wardrobe.  This was an outward symbol of the national confidence in the 1920’s, an extremely prosperous time when great fortunes were made in the days before personal income taxes.  The average American enjoyed a generally higher standard of living, at least until the Stock Market Crash of 1929.  The museum holds a sizeable collection of 1920’s era fashions, and they are occasionally brought out of storage and put on display, as these photos show.
