Agricultural Items

The earliest history of La Porte County cannot be told without the story of Agriculture.  The main draw to the pioneer settlers was the fertile land that was abundant in the county.  Farming was the mainstay of the economy of the area then, and has remained a big part of the production of La Porte County to the present day.

The museum displays a wide variety of early farming tools which show the amount of muscle power needed before the internal combustion engine was applied to farming.  Mainly manpower and animal power in the form of draft horses and mules were the sources of energy.  Hand operated planting devices and harvesting scythes are on display.  An early single blade plow which was pulled
by a horse or two helps the visitor to get a concept of the amount of work involved in farming even a few acres of earth.

Other tools such as a grindstone for keeping the many hand tools sharp, a wooden hay rake, harnesses and saddles for managing the draft horses, an egg incubator, and a cream separator show the variety of objects needed to manage an efficient farm.
