La Porte County Court House This photo shows the 1848 La Porte County Court House after an impressive ice storm. The Court House was designed by famed Chicago architect John Mills Van Osdel, who was brought to Chicago by the city's first mayor to design his home. Van Osdel went on to design many of Chicago's early period buildings, and rescued his own blueprints from the Chicago Fire of 1871, allowing many important buildings to be quickly reconstructed after the embers died out.
