Ice Storm of 1871

These two views of the La Porte County Circuit Court House show the results of an ice storm in January 1871, which coated trees all over town with thick ice. The court house shown was built in 1848 and was the second of three that have stood on the same site.

The clock tower on the building, designed by Chicago architect John Mills van Osdel, was reproduced by Dr. Peter C. Kesling for his Door Prairie Auto Museum building in La Porte. This building is now the home of the La Porte County Historical Society Museum.
