"Forgotten History"

On Display March, April & May, 2013.

What secrets lie in wait at the La Porte County Historical Society Museum?  The staff has been hard at work uncovering those secrets while preparing the new exhibit, “Forgotten History”.  For 107 years, residents of La Porte County have been entrusting their precious, and sometimes not so precious, heirlooms to the society.  The haunted doorbell from the Andrew/Zimmerman house, the clock that hung in the Warden’s office at the Indiana State Prison, memorabilia from the Great Chicago Fire, a watercolor by Isamu Noguchi, are all items that have been carefully preserved over time and are being high-lighted for their historical significance.  More than two-dozen items have been chosen for this special exhibit that can be seen at the museum starting on March 1st, and continuing through the end of May 2013.

Are you aware of the location of Indian Mounds in La Porte County? The map that shows them is part of this current display.  Have you ever seen the Japanese cigarettes that were found in a cave at Iwo Jima? Or the Christening gown worn by President Benjamin Harrison’s daughter?  Digging through the artifacts has unearthed some amazing La Porte history.  It makes one wonder if every small community has as much important history as La Porte county has; not just on the local level, but having national and even international significance.  The current display should make all La Porte County residents proud of their heritage.

This clock hung in the Warden's office at Indiana State Prison in Michgan City.

It was donated in 1970.
