Invalid Cups Display These unusual china cups with elongated spouts were created in the days before drinking straws were common. Liquids and broth were fed through the spout to adults who were sick and could not takesolid food, or to infants. The alternate name for these cups is “pap feeder.” They were apparently offered as accessory pieces to many regular china patterns, thus explaining the wide variety of designs and decorations seen in this collection. The collection was assembled by a La Porte County resident, Lois Price of Wanatah. She was a beautician by trade, and had a passion for collecting. She was born in 1914, daughter of Urban and Florence Harning, and died in 1977. The cup collection came to the museum through her estate. The antique cabinet they are displayed in belonged to Mary Hutson, a
registered nurse at Beatty Memorial Hospital in Westville. Mary used
the cabinet at the hospital to store her equipment. The cabinet came
to the museum after her death in 1978. It is appropriate that the cabinet
be used to display objects made to minister to the sick.
