Historical Photo from September, 2008 Samuel Fox's Woolen Mills In 1864, Samuel Fox conceived the idea of establishing a woolen mill in LaPorte. He enlisted the support of prominent men of the town; Jacob and Simon Wile, Joseph Guggenhime, Isaac Kramer, Meinrad and John Rumely and John Fildes. The mill was located on the west side of Fox Street at what was the south edge of town at the time. An adjacent pond known as "Soapie's Ocean" collected the waste water from the plant. Today an apartment complex occupies the site.
